In the Western calendar, Dongzhi or Winter Solstice falls on December 21 or December 22 when the night is longest and the day is shortest in the northern hemisphere.
As one of the 24 solar terms, in many parts of China, as well as some ethnic minority groups, this festival is considered a very important day. The celebration of the last solar term of the year indicates that a new year is fast approaching.
